Collaborative partners developed a Rogue Basin Cohesive Forest Restoration Strategy (RBS) targeting careful thinning and controlled burning on 1 million acres across the 4.6 million acre Rogue Basin. This strategy tiers to the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy by working across all lands to restore resilient landscapes, promote fire adapted communities, and improve opportunities for safe and effective wildfire response.
The Rogue Basin Strategy protects complex forest, optimizes wildfire risk mitigation, promotes diverse and enduring habitats, and ...
The Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative and Southern Oregon Climate Action Now organized a workshop “Rogue Basin Forests for the Future: Climate Adaptation in Forest Restoration." The workshop addressed forest management in relation to climate change concerns. We briefly reviewed information from the recent Rogue Basin Cohesive Forest Restoration Strategy and recent Climate change trends and projections. The workshop focused on constructive dialogue regarding these topics. Information gathered from the workshop was used to develop an addendum to the Rogue ...

This project builds on The Rogue Basin Action Plan for Resilient Watersheds and Forests in a Changing Climate by implementing recommendations from the Action Plan in resource management and planning, linking key vulnerabilities with specific adaptation strategies and tactics on the ground, and linking adaptation with restoration, planning, and resource monitoring programs across multiple land ownerships. Specific management objectives include:
Implement restoration projects that integrate climate-smart practices, a proof of concept for southwestern Oregon.
Applegate Fire District 9, the Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative, the Bureau of Land Management, and Ruch School middle-schoolers came together to assess their school for potential fire hazards before the upcoming fire season. Students helped to clear space, plant FIREWISE plants, and learn about how to be FIREWISE in a hands-on, engaging way. They learned about fire science, fire behavior, plant adaptability, and the three zones that make up a defensible space. They put what they learned into practice by helping build FIREWISE demonstration ...
In February, the SOFRC and TNC partnered in a workshop with several members and stakeholders in the community. This event, which included over 40 people, was held in an attempt to determine the variety of values on the landscape threatened by fire. Using current fuel loads and fire behavior and risk modeling, we are working to develop a map of the high value areas at high risk of fire. The values are determined by those who attended the workshop. A follow up workshop was held in April.
The Collaborative has created a plan to engage natural resource and farm based interests to advance support for its regional forest restoration strategy. This includes outreach to groups, organizations, interests and individuals with a primary interest in forest, farm and/or water issues. At the state level, presentations have also been made to the Oregon Governorʼs Office and Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board. The Collaborative also been involved with the Governorʼs Federal Forest Advisory Committee through participation in meetings, networking and informat...
Convened by the Collaborativeʼs Executive Director,George McKinley, this multiparty team has worked tirelessly to refine and expand the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative 2011 Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program (CFLRP) proposal into a broader, more detailed, widely vetted and spatially explicit forest restoration strategy for the Rogue Basin. The strategy was recently submitted as a set of recommendations to the Oregon Bureau of Land Management Interdisciplinary (ID) Team for revised Western ...
Convened by Gwyn Myer, the Collaborativeʼs Project Coordinator, and Ken Wearstler, Silviculturist and Climate Adaptation Coordinator for the Rogue-River Siskiyou National Forest, this project is part of the Climate Solutions University (CSU) Climate Adaptation Planning and Implementation Program. Aimed at informing future forest planning and fulfilling agency adaptation planning requirements, this project has engaged a broad spectrum of regional natural resource and economic interests, The result is a localized, actionable climate adaptation plan that the ...
